Swarms seem to be internally chaotic, measurable only in statistics, externally ordered, strategically acting entities but in a figurative sense, they have been present in music for a long time. Mosquitoes, fish, birds become single notes and form agile masses of highly sensorial sound. The idea of swarms can be implemented musically on many various levels, be it as microtonal sonic textures or complex interactive installations. In German, the noun 'Schwarm' (lover) and verb 'schwärmen' (to be besotted with) can be used as emotional descriptors that expand the plane of meaning to the landscape of the human soul.

Musikfestival Bern investigates all these different kinds of applications of meaning, in compositions for orchestras and chamber ensembles, in installations, performances and in musico-scientific dialogue.
